The Canadian Federation of Students was formed in 1981 to provide students with an effective and united voice, provincially and nationally. Students recognised they needed to unite under one banner to be truly effective in representing their collective interests to the provincial and federal governments, which make decisions on a whole range of issues that affect students. Today, the Federation is comprised of over half a million students from more than 75 college and university students’ associations across Canada.
Continuing education, distance education and part-time degree students – members of CESAX –democratically voted in a referendum to join the Canadian Federation of Students in 2005; as a result of the vote CESAX was affirmed as member local 105. Together with the Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU), X University Graduate Students’ Union (XGSU) and other member locals (students’ unions) across the GTA, Ontario, and Canada we are working together for an accessible, inclusive, anti-oppression post-secondary system. United with over 500,000 students we more effectively represent collective interests of students to the provincial and federal governments and can influence those decision-makers that have a major impacts on students’ lives.
