Juneteenth

June 19

Slavery has been documented in Canada from pre-colonization, through the 16th century and beyond. Whether through French or British colonialism, African and Black folks have been subject to anti-Black racism, slavery, and genocide on this land. Juneteenth comemorates the end of slavery as a result of the transatlantic slave trade in the United States.

However, reform is not enough. Although slavery is technically abolished, it has evolved in many ways into new systems and has taken on newer, more socially acceptable names. Since the “abolition” of slavery, the subjugation, degradation, and exploitation of people based on their race has continued in many different forms.
